Now for the back verandah roof

We are really happy with the way the new house roof looks.  It’s lifted the house up so it doesn’t sit so heavy on the block.  Peter’s taken off the back verandah roof and has been spending time drawing up ideas for how to replace it, hoping anyone over 5′ 8″ can stand at the edge without bruising their forehead… and that’s not a joke!

Plan A, plan B, plan C and now finally plan D inspired by the house around the corner in the picture above.  A floating roof using a product called Cooldek.  So that’s the plan ’til the quotes come back in and blows the budget for that area!

Question is… are we out of touch with how much this will really cost?

Back to the drawing board to work out the details.

Watch this space 🙂

What a difference a day makes

Well, really it was a day and a half.

After the continual debate about keeping or replacing the roof the result speaks for itself (and no goanna to be seen… snakes, rats or anything else hiding in the roof).

It’s good to see the asbestos cement roofing being safely loaded into the back of the truck and taken away.  Our steep driveway was a real challenge for the truck…. it left with a smoking clutch.

It was a lot of extra work for our sparkie when the roof came off.  The electrical cables had been originally laid across the battens which is a far cry from modern wiring standards.  Luckily our electician Troy was up for the task of rewiring – much more of a job than he was anticipating.

That slowed the roofies down of course while was replacing the cabling.  But a long smoko on a Sunny Coast winters day isn’t that hard to take.  This also meant Peter had time to get the extra insulation into the garage and front verandah roof spaces.

The job went into the second day because of the rewiring and was almost finished when a screw went through the wiring for the lights of the whole house.  Luckily that was not our drama to fix and the work was over in time for late morning coffee and cake to celebrate the job well done (and spend some time reassuring the poor cat who has spent 2 days trying to find a place to hide from the constant noise).

Not one to rest on his laurels, Peter is already pulling down the back verandah roof to rebuild so anyone over 5 foot can see out.

This could be fun…

The front’s been cleared enough and the insulation delivered ready for the new roof.

Looks like the weather will be fine so no hold-ups expected… EXCEPT… if that scratching noise we are hearing in the roof ends up being our resident goanna!  Our neighbour has seen it climbing out from the gutter and making it’s way across the roof a while back. Let’s hope it’s found it’s way off the roof and into the bush before Thursday.

Setting the priorities

Hahahaha – Got sent this pic and text at work…

“First day of the ‘real’ reno!!  Planning and coffee are essential components of a successful project”

Got to love his commitment to the process!
